“Interviewing the Sidewalk”—an immersive walk & sound collection

On May 6, during a beautiful afternoon in downtown Troy, several dozen people took part in “Interviewing the Sidewalk,” an immersive walk and collection experience directed by FOCUS Lab artist-in-residence Jack Magai.

Guided by an audio file on their phones, participants donned blue booties and were released onto 3rd St, where they listened, explored, collected dirt and debris, and recorded sounds that were beamed back into the lab. Their soil collection (and all that was within) was then returned to the Lab, where seeds were planted in the accumulation.

“I’ll never see this street in quite the same way,” said one participant.
