THE FOCUS Living Lab

We're excited to announce the creation of the FOCUS (Future of Cities and Urban Sustainability) Living Lab, our first brick and mortar space.

The FOCUS Living Lab is a partnership between The Future of Small Cities Institute, RPI, Siemens, and the City of Troy. The Lab will be an interactive exhibit space in Troy, NY that showcases urban design solutions for sustainable communities. We're exploring the idea of manifesting a living room for the city, in the tradition of the "Urban Rooms" that are appearing across the UK.

While we wait for a permanent home, we will be inhabiting a pop-up space in a ground floor storefront at 21 3rd St in the old Freemasons' Lodge and future home of the AI Center of Excellence. The storefront's last incarnation was a jewelry store.

Scenes from the students’ first encounter with the space.

We're working with an RPI design studio led by Michael Oatman to design and fabricate the pop-up space's first exhibition, "This River of Ours: The Future of Hudson Waterfronts," launching in Spring 2022.
