We're extremely honored to present two of the country's leading visionaries around small and midsize cities, Alan Berube & Ben Forman, in conversation.
What a moment to take stock of the challenges and opportunities that these metro areas face coming out of the pandemic, particularly when it comes to resilience and sustainability planning. Small cities are nimble but they are also facing a potential fiscal crisis—navigating the waters ahead will be tricky, but will also potentially provide a recovery road map for the country as a whole. Our speakers have access to a wealth of data that point to the important trends in health, housing, development, and sustainable workforce going forward.
Speakers:
ALAN BERUBE is a senior fellow and deputy director at the Metropolitan Policy Program at The Brooking Institute. Alan has authored dozens of Brookings publications on economic and demographic trends in metropolitan areas, social policies affecting families and communities, and the role of cities in a globalizing economy. He is co-author of Confronting Suburban Poverty in America (Brookings Press, 2013) and the landmark study Small and Midsized Legacy Communities: Trends, Assets, and Principles for Action. (2019)
BEN FORMAN is Research Director at MassInc. Ben coordinates the development of the organization’s research agenda and oversees production of white papers and reports. With a background in urban revitalization and sustainable growth and development, he frequently writes about Gateway Cities in Massachusetts, including issues around digital equity, neighborhood stabilization, transit oriented development, and criminal justice reform.
Each speaker will give a short presentation followed by a conversation with Reif Larsen, founder of The Future of Small Cities Institute, and Q&A from the audience.
The FoSCI Winter Dialogue is presented in collaboration with the NY Upstate American Planning Association, TAP, the Troy Innovation Garage, and the Capital District Regional Planning Commission.
